Lucky Knickers

The above picture is of my dear mate Viv cuddling Molls on one of our walks for Cornwall Today, taken at Roundwood Quay.

I’m not a superstitious person but where I do look for help is from my knickers and jewellery. That could be entirely misconstrued so stop snorting. I’m referring to the colour – or patterns – of those items of undergarments, to bring me luck or strength.

I have a favourite pair which is (or should that be ‘are’?) red with black spots and are used for occasions when I know I will be tested and need some courage. For instance, on the day I knew would be Pip’s last. The day of his service and last party. When going to interview Bill Bryson. No, actually I was wearing lemon coloured trousers so I had to wear white ones for those. But I wore my red spotty ones for a busy day with meetings and then giving a talk at Penzance Literary Festival. Or when I just have those wobbly days when I need a bit of secret support.

I also have some lucky jewellery – a lovely swan pendant that Pip made; some of his lovely Cornish tin pendants, and a lovely ring of my grandmother’s that I didn’t wear for ages as I was worried about losing it. Then a friend said, “Seems a shame not to wear it. Why not put it on when you go out?” So that’s what I do, and it means that wherever I go, she can come too.

Talking of superstitions, I don’t actually walk under ladders right now. Don’t want to tempt any more bad luck.

Any else have any superstitions?

Oh yes!! My purple knickers have always been my secret weapon - for all those times you've mentioned when inner strength just needs a hand.
Love to you

Hey you wear whatever makes you feel good Flowerpot.

I'm not really superstitious (she says crossing her fingers). ;)

I always wear red when I need to tackle something. Colours are very important for me and I have to have the right clothes (and underwear) to match my mood. when I was in a difficult job a while back, I always carried a crystal in my pocket too. Mx

Ak - I do and I will!

Morton - that's interesting about red being a good colour for you too. I guess it's positive isn't it and strong? Crystal sounds a good idea.

I have to admit to a pair of lucky running knickers for half-marathons. But what really sent me into a panic before the last one was missing my lucky safety pins (to pin my race number on). Tragic!

Chris - I can well understand that!

Haha - I too have to wear a certain pair for important occasions. I suppose it gives us the confidence to do certan things we would find otherwise difficult to face - like Superman, but at least I don't wear mine OVER my trousers!!

Addy - another member of the Lucky Knickers Club! I'm laughing at the idea of someone wearing those over their trousers though!!

Sue, it's lovely how you manage to combine sadness and sunshine in your posts - very inspirational. Your mention of the knickers you wore for Bill Bryson (well, not exactly for...) made me think of listening to the podcast of his Desert Island Discs last night. There are many marvellous things about Bill, but I han't realised what a lovely, infectious giggle he has! Thanks for the smiles.

Your post made me laugh!

I used to wear a blue necklace for interviews - apparently you should wear something blue around your neck to help you with conversation (something to do with the throat chakra!) It often worked! X

Oh my, I have LOADS. I can't wear a certain pair of slippers any more, because they gave me such a hard time trying to write my last novel. Also, I can't write without my fuzzy blanket somewhere nearby and my coffee cup must not be removed from my desk until the day's writing is finished.

Eek, now I sound a bit freakish!

Jane - thanks for that. Bill Bryson is a very engaging man indeed. I could listen to his voice for hours.

Talli - I love hearing about other people's superstitions - particularly other writers!

Mandy - I'd never heard that but will try it!

Can't say I have any lucky knickers!! But I do wear my Grandma's eternity ring which apart from being a beautiful piece of jewellery, is also my lucky piece of jewellery.
