A reading meme

I have been memed by RT about my reading.

Total number of books owned – thousands over the years. They come and go except for the old favourites.

Last book read
Boy in the World by Niall Williams

Last book bought
The moment you were gone by Nicci Gerrard

5 meaningful books
HARNESSING PEACOCKS by MARY WESLEY. A story of great originality, wit and imagination. Lessons for us all.
NEVER CHANGE by Elizabeth Berg. It’s never too late for anyone to fall in love, but if they die, you mustn’t give up. Life is for living.
RACHEL’S HOLIDAY by Marion Keyes. A bittersweet tale of addiction.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD BABY GIRL – anything by FANNIE FLAGG is worth reading
A SPOT OF BOTHER by MARK HADDON. The agonies of a dysfunctional family.

I have to tag five people who are –

Crystal Jigsaw
Rilly Super
Liz Fenwick
Lane
Mother at large

And a PS. I've just started the new novel and need a name for a dog. A young collie-cross. Any ideas? Oh, as aptly pointed out by MissU, it depends who owns the dog. It's the older, sprightly lady who is in her late 60s/early 70s. I thought of calling the dog Fred, after Fred Astaire, but think he needs to be a bit more imaginative than that. She is an ex-dancer, so - no, he can't be called Rudolph...

oh my first meme. Thank you flowerpot:))

Nice choices too. Fannie Flagg is on my TBR pile. I might just push her to the top now.

A Spot of Bother, I thoroughly enjoyed. I haven't read the rest, but will certainly look them up.

As for the dog's name, I think it'll be hard for us to choose because it's dependent on who owns the dog. The name Winston, for example, says something comletely differnt about the owner than the name Schnookums.

I loved 'A Spot of Bother' and will have a look at some of the others.

I love that picture. When we had dogs and cats, I found the cats really ruled the dogs indoors. But as soon as they got outside the dogs would chase them up trees. Some territorial thing I never understood. Lovely blog. I followed you from Bev's

Heck Flowerpot! I'll have to had a jolly good think about this one. The only books I tend to read are the TV times and a dictionary. I'll have a good rummage around my book shelves (not to mention the Argos bag on top of my wardrobe) and see what I can come up with.

Your choice is great though, I have a Mark Haddon book (The Curious Incident etc) and I also went through a Marian Keyes phase.

Thank you for the meme!

For the dog, what about 'Trampas'?
We had a collie called that when I was a kid - it was named after one of the characters on a tv Western, I think.

Liz, glad to see that you are not technically challenged any more - which, as you know, is more than can be said for me.

MissU - very good point about the dog. He's the older lady's dog - I've just added a PPS to the blog.

jj - I think reading is such a personal thing, but hope you enjoy some of what I suggested.

frances - glad to meet you and please call this way again. Our cat definitely rules the roost here though he's had a nasty fight recently and is much quieter these days.

Crystal - will be interested to see your choice as and when! I loved Rachel's Holiday by Marian K but after that I'm afraid I went off her. Rachel's H was good and gritty albeit laced well with humour, whereas I found her subsequent books didn't grab me at all.

Tim - Trampas is good. I will put that on the list - many thanks.

How about calling the dog Tino, for Valentino?

Einstein for the dog.

Flowerpot said...

Breadbox - another good idea. I will compile a shortlist. Thanks!

Lesley - another good one, thanks!

How about Percy (for the dog, I mean). I've always thought of it as a Jack Russell sort of name, but might suit a collie/cross?

Not familiar with any of your book choices, although read and enjoyed Mark Haddon's first book, but will investigate...

Flowerpot said...

thanks, LB - Percy will be added to the list!

I like your book meme a lot. More good things to add to my reading list.

For the dog - Nick (after Nick and Nora Charles) or Dash (after Hammett)?

Oh God, I was in love with Trampas! He was in 'The Virginian'!

My suggestion is for the dog is Banjo - it's a good one to call.

My suggestion for a dog for an ex-dancer of older years would be 'ouch' as it would probably be gazing at you constantly every time you moved.
However, what kind of dancing? classical, tap or what?? I rather like the idea of: Bojangles, Fosse (Bob) or Swayze or (my favourite)Cagney after James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy - grreat.. not many people know he danced very well for a man with short legs!

the meme is done :-)

Flowerpot said...

correspondent - hope you enjoy some of my books and thanks for dog names!

livvy - yes, banjo is a good one to call. good thinking.

thinker - ouch is brilliant!! I love it. Fosse also. She's classical dancer actually but that doesn't matter. Everyone knows Bob!

Liz - look forward to reading your chioce. Many thanks.

a great response to the meme FP. I agree, anything by F. Flagg is worth reading. Never Change is a good book too.

Hope you find a name for the dog. Good on you for starting the new novel, I can't wait to read it!

If not Fred for the dog, what about Astaire?

We used to have a border-collie cross called Max. Not sure if that name is any good for your novel but I can't read "border-collie cross" without his name popping into my mind!
